Background Research: PAUL THE OCTOPUS

Paul the Octopus refers to the octopus that lived in Aquarium Sea Life Center in Oberhausen, Germany. It is best known for its good prediction on results of 2010 World Cup Matches, especially Germans.

As shown on the video, Paul was given two boxes that both contain the food and the flags of two nations; one Germany and one the other opponent nations. When Paul chooses the box with certain flag that nation was considered to be next winner of the match. It seemed stupid at first time, but as Paul continuously predicted the outcomes of Germany, people start to get more interest and Paul became extremely famous. However, on 26th of October 2010, Paul died of natural causes.

Since Paul became famous, people across the world, as usual, took their photoshops, illustrators, and webpages to create fan-pages and parodies of Paul. People either praised him or hated him for predicting the defeat of their nations. People jokingly referred him as future "sushi dish" for predicting opponent nations.

The reactions to the Paul the Octopus were, in fact, various. Until it predicted the lost of Germany in semi-finals of Worldcup, the nations that were lost against Germany did not hide their (humorous) hatred toward Paul.

However when Paul predicted the defeat of Germany in semi-finals of 2010 World Cup, and when Germany was actually defeated, Germans made parody videos against Paul the Octopus. This was actually something new culture that did not exist in the previous world cups; when the nation lost, people usually blamed the players or the coaches. In 2010 World Cup, people also blamed the octopus.

Paul became digital too, since it was made into iPhone application. The application allows you to give two types of choice to the digital Paul so it randomly chooses out of two. It is actually ironic that the real-life Paul has died, but Paul in iPhone application would live forever as long as people keep their interest in him.
